Crawling pattern - Why does it help restore a better connection between the pelvis and the ribcage above?
The ability to cross the midline of the body is one of the central skills that we follow when it comes to a baby’s motor development. Development of midline crossing is connected to building good awareness of one’s body, bilateral integration which means communication between both sides of the brains, core stability and trunk rotation.
The more babies cross the midline, the stronger the communication grows between the two sides of the body and the better that communication grows, the better they can cross the midline of the body.
And how do babies learn how to do that? Developing that skill starts once the baby is around 3 months old. At that age, a baby is able to cross the midline with their eyes as they visually track and object that is moved in front of them. By 6 months, they begin reaching across the body with one hand and around 8 months they cross the midline with both hands by transferring objects from one hand to the other. Then by around 9 months, babies start crawling which acts as the precursor for walking as an adult.
Crawling forces the baby to learn how to coordinate the movements between the two sides of their bodies which requires good communication between the two sides of the brains.
Crawling helps a baby to:
👉 Develop binocular vision when the baby needs to constantly shift between looking down (near) and looking ahead (far)
👉 Improve hand-eye coordination
👉 Learn how to stabilize their body with trunk muscles
👉 Learn how to move with the two sides of the body doing the exact opposite thing
So the way we move as adults, got formed during our early months and years as children through one of our fundamental movement patterns of Crawling.
But what if crawling wasn’t only just beneficial for babies?
Practicing crawling patterns can be especially helpful for those with pretty much any type of pelvic girdle pain or symptoms was it: SI-joint issue, pelvic floor tension and tighness, piriformis syndrome, pubalgia, leaking etc. because it helps you connect the movements of the Pelvis with the Ribcage above for a balanced function between the respiratory diaphgram and the pelvic floor which is essential for our ability to manage pressure and create stabilty around our trunk and spine. With that as our base, we can then learn how to create more balanced movement while being upright learning how to coordinate together the different sides of our bodies and the opposite side upper and lower limbs.
All of the benefits that crawling has for a developing baby, it also provides for us adults in case we are struggling to make sense of our bodies and the way we move ourselves through space!
Hi, I’m Coach Ansku
I created this course, because I wanted to enable more people having access to these simple tools that once helped me so much!
Typically while training we are taught how to tense up and tighten, contract muscles and work up to failure. And even though that might apply in situations when we are trying to build maximal strength, all the rest of the time we should be able to move our bodies without needing to grip and brace!
But no one seems to ever teach us how to do that and most of us also have no clue how to. But if you don't know how to move your body without tensing and tightening then how could your body ever feel anything but tense and tight?
And that is a problem because we were never meant to be tense and tight, but instead somewhat loose and mobile because that allows us to have access to all the possible ways that our bodies were designed to move in!
So let's start by learning how to relax and let go, so that when we start building strength, we wouldn learn how to build it in a way that doesn't make our bodies just lock up: We tense up muscles and our bodies only as much as is appropriate for the task in hand......
But not more than that and this is the important part :)
This mini course will help you;
1) Learn how to connect the ribcage and the pelvis for better respiratory function which then allows you to move more fluidly!
2) Learn how to coordinate the movements of the left and the right side of your body together
3) Learn how to stabilize your body through your trunk muscles
4) Learn how to create movement through all planes of motion
You'll learn how the pelvis and ribcage are connected together through the respiratory system
You'll learn how to balance out the function of the left and the right side of your respiratory system allowing you access to move as much to the left as you do towards right
You'll learn how you can introduce some crawling patterns into your training too on both; at floor level as well as in upright
